About the platforms

Shopify and Dsco, and what connecting them actually involves

One is your store and product source of truth. The other is a dropship network where every retailer sets its own data rules. The work of the combo sits in between: mapping, stock accuracy and acknowledgement deadlines.

Shopify

Your storefront & product source

Shopify is the hosted commerce platform behind millions of stores, from single-brand D2C sites to Shopify Plus enterprises. Products live as products with variants, stock is tracked as inventory levels per location, orders carry fulfilments and refunds, and everything is reachable through the Admin API. For most suppliers it is already the cleanest catalogue they own, which makes it the natural source for a dropship programme.

Dsco

Retailer–supplier dropship network

Dsco (a CommerceHub company) is the dropship and marketplace platform that sits between retailers and their suppliers. Retailers invite you in as a trading partner and publish orders into it; you publish item data, inventory, acknowledgements and shipments back. One Dsco account can serve many retailer relationships at once, each with its own data requirements, acknowledgement window and shipping rules.

How the combo works

Shopify stays the source, Commercium does the translation

Your team keeps editing products, costs and stock where they already work. Commercium reads Shopify, applies one mapping profile per Dsco trading partner, publishes items and inventory, then reverses the flow for orders: downloaded from Dsco, acknowledged inside the retailer’s window, created in Shopify for fulfilment, and closed out with shipment, tracking and the retailer’s packing slip.

How Shopify concepts map onto Dsco
Shopify Dsco What Commercium does
Product + variants Dsco item records Each Shopify variant becomes one Dsco item, carrying the titles, media, categories and attributes the retailer requires.
Barcode (UPC / EAN / GTIN) Item identifiers Optional in Shopify, expected by most retailers, completeness and format are validated before submission.
Inventory levels per location Quantity & warehouse availability Selected Shopify locations are pooled into one available quantity, with safety buffers per trading partner.
Cost & compare-at price Cost, MSRP & retail price Dropship cost and MSRP are derived from your Shopify pricing with per-retailer rules, so nothing is maintained twice.
Metafields Retailer-required attributes Retailer-specific values live in metafields so Shopify stays the single place your merchandisers edit them.
Order + fulfilment Retailer order + acknowledgement Dsco orders are created in Shopify (or your ERP) for picking, and acknowledged inside the retailer’s window.
Tracking & fulfilment service Shipment confirmation Carrier, service level and tracking are submitted per package or line using that retailer’s codes.
Locations & 3PLs Ship-from & packing-slip routing Routing rules pick the warehouse for each retailer order and send its branded packing slip to that station.
The API surface we work with
Shopify Admin GraphQL API Products, variants, inventory levels, locations, orders, fulfilment orders, refunds and metafields, plus webhooks for near real-time change capture.
Shopify Rate limits Calculated-cost throttling means bulk catalogue work is batched and prioritised; stock and cost updates get the fast lane.
Dsco Items Create and update item records with identifiers, media, categories and each retailer’s required attributes.
Dsco Inventory Push available quantity, cost, MSRP and warehouse-level availability on a fast cycle.
Dsco Orders Pull retailer purchase orders with ship-to details, service level, ship-by dates and line requirements.
Dsco Acknowledge Accept, backorder or cancel lines inside the retailer’s acknowledgement window and report status changes.
Dsco Shipments Submit shipped quantities, carrier, service level and tracking numbers per package or per line.
Dsco Documents Retrieve the retailer’s branded packing slip for an order and route it to the fulfilling warehouse.

One Shopify connection, one Dsco REST API key, one mapping profile per retailer. No file drops and no SFTP schedule to babysit, and the second and tenth trading partner reuse the catalogue work done for the first.

Field experience

What we learnt while integrating Shopify with Dsco for our users

Notes from live Shopify-to-Dsco operations across apparel, footwear, outdoor, pet and department-store retailers, and how each lesson became automation inside Commercium.

Field mappings differ for every trading partner

This is the single biggest lesson from live Dsco work: shipping and product-data workflows are not uniform across the network. Two retailers on the same platform will want different attributes on an item, different carrier and service codes on a shipment, different handling of ship-from locations and different packing-slip behaviour. Commercium keeps one mapping profile per trading partner over your single Shopify catalogue, so the work is done once per retailer and never repeated across your systems.

Overselling is what a dropship programme is scored on

The moment a Shopify store also supplies three Dsco retailers, the same physical unit is offered four times. A dropship cancellation costs more than a store one, it hits the retailer’s fill-rate scorecard as well as the customer. Selected Shopify locations are pooled into one available quantity, adjusted by a safety buffer per retailer, and pushed to Dsco near real time; when an order lands anywhere, the pool is recalculated and every partner is updated.

We sync the flows a dropship relationship actually runs on

Retailers judge suppliers on data quality, fill rate, acknowledgement speed and on-time shipping, so those are the flows we automate end to end. Commercium provides product, inventory, order, order-acknowledge, shipment and packing-slip sync across every Dsco trading partner on your account, driven from Shopify.

We use the Dsco REST API for connectivity

We integrate Dsco over its REST API rather than file feeds. It gives immediate confirmation of what Dsco accepted, per-record error detail instead of a rejected batch, and a sync cadence that keeps Shopify inventory close to real time on every retailer.

Onboarding takes an hour once the API key exists

Getting your Dsco account and API key through the retailer’s programme is the part that takes real time. After that it takes one hour at most to get onboarded, Shopify connects through our app or your Admin API credentials, and your trading partners are detected from the same key.

Dsco’s own portal makes onboarding smoother

Dsco provides an intuitive onboarding interface inside its portal that supports initial order, acknowledgement and shipping testing. We run those tests with your team, so the first real retailer order is never the first order you have ever processed.

Shopify catalogues are shopper-ready, not retailer-ready

A store catalogue that converts beautifully can still be rejected: barcodes blank because Shopify never required them, a mandatory retailer attribute with nowhere to live, or an image that has to be reachable at a public URL. We validate against each partner’s requirements before submission and report errors per record.

Acknowledgement is a separate flow from fulfilment

Retailers expect an order response well before a shipment, and a Shopify-paced workflow will miss it. Commercium acknowledges against live pooled stock, backorders or cancels lines under your rules, and keeps the audit trail so scorecards stay clean while the warehouse works its normal cycle.

Packing slips belong in the pick-and-pack flow

A retailer-branded packing slip in the wrong box is a chargeback. We retrieve each order’s slip from Dsco and route it with the pick list to the fulfilling Shopify location or 3PL, so it prints where the order is packed.

Dropship orders shouldn’t behave like store orders

Created naively, retailer orders trigger Shopify customer emails, distort channel reporting and pollute your customer records. We create them tagged by trading partner, with notifications suppressed, the right location assigned and dropship cost rather than retail price on the lines.

Adding the next retailer should be configuration

Once Shopify and your Dsco account are wired into Commercium, a new trading partner is a new mapping profile over the same source catalogue. That is why a retailer we have not worked with before can usually be added within a day.

Working notes from our integration team, we update this section as Shopify and retailer requirements change.

How it works

How the Shopify + Dsco integration gets done

Five steps from first call to live data sync, most of the elapsed time is your decision, not the build.

1

Book a demo with Commercium

Tell us which Dsco retailers you supply and how your Shopify store, warehouses and back-office systems are set up. We walk you through the integration on a live call.

2

Get your keys ready

Retrieve your account API key from Dsco, and have your Shopify credentials ready, or simply install our Shopify app from the Shopify App Store.

3

Meet your integration engineer

Our integration engineer guides you through the software. If you decide to go ahead, onboarding starts right away, given that you have already obtained the API keys.

4

Test orders & other flows

Run test orders, acknowledgements and shipments with your engineer, using Dsco’s own onboarding interface, until every flow behaves the way your operation needs.

5

Contact Dsco support & go live

Once you are satisfied with the data sync, contact Dsco support to switch the connection live. Commercium runs the workflows and flags anything that needs attention.

Already have your Dsco API key?

Onboarding takes an hour at most. Book a slot and we will have your Shopify store connected and your first test order, acknowledgement and shipment running on the same call.

FAQ

Shopify + Dsco questions, answered

Technical questions about how the two platforms sync, and general questions about running on Commercium.

Can Commercium create products on Dsco?
Yes. Product sync is available for Dsco, so Commercium creates and updates item records directly from your Shopify catalogue, identifiers, titles, descriptions, images, categories, costs and the attributes each retailer requires. Items are validated against that trading partner’s requirements before submission, and errors come back per record rather than as a failed batch.
Can Commercium create products on Shopify?
Yes. Products, variants, images, inventory levels and metafields can be created and updated in Shopify from your ERP, PIM or another connected channel, so Shopify can be either the source of truth or the destination, depending on how you run your catalogue.
Can Dsco orders be sent to my ERP?
Yes. Dsco orders can be transformed and sent to supported ERP, ecommerce, OMS, WMS, accounting or fulfilment systems, with acknowledgement, shipment and tracking flowing back to the retailer through Dsco.
Can Shopify orders be sent to my ERP?
Yes. Shopify orders can be transformed and sent to supported ERP, ecommerce, OMS, WMS, accounting or fulfilment systems, and fulfilment, tracking and refunds flow back into Shopify.
Can Commercium help new Dsco sellers?
Yes. Commercium works with businesses during onboarding to prepare product data, connect systems, configure mappings and establish operational workflows, including the per-retailer field mapping that usually decides how smooth a first dropship programme is.
Can I connect more than one seller account of Dsco using Commercium?
Yes, you can add as many seller accounts as you want while remaining on your same plan. You only upgrade when you cross your plan’s order limits.
Can I connect more than one Shopify store using Commercium?
Yes, you can add as many Shopify stores as you want while remaining on your same plan, useful for multi-brand or multi-country setups. You only upgrade when you cross your plan’s order limits.
What are the next steps to connect Dsco using Commercium?
Five steps: book a demo with Commercium; get your account API key from Dsco and have your Shopify credentials ready, or install our Shopify app from the Shopify App Store; our integration engineer guides you through the software and, if you decide to go ahead, starts onboarding given that you have already obtained the API keys; test orders and other flows together with the engineer; then, once you are satisfied with the data sync, contact Dsco support and go live. Onboarding itself takes an hour at most once your API key exists.
Does Commercium support both Shopify and Shopify Plus?
Yes. Commercium connects standard Shopify stores and Shopify Plus, including multi-store, expansion-store and international setups.
Does Commercium support Shopify expansion stores?
Yes. Expansion stores used for regional or B2B storefronts can be connected and orchestrated alongside your primary store.
Can Shopify B2B companies and locations be synchronized?
Yes, companies, contacts and individual company locations can be created and kept in sync with your connected systems.
Can company-specific catalogs and prices come from an ERP?
Yes. Negotiated catalogs and price lists can be assigned to company locations and updated automatically as ERP agreements change.
How does Commercium connect to Dsco?
Over the Dsco REST API, authorised with your Dsco account API key. There are no file drops or SFTP schedules to maintain, and the same connection carries product, inventory, order, acknowledgement, shipment and packing-slip traffic for every trading partner on your account.
How long does the Shopify + Dsco onboarding take?
It takes one hour at most to get onboarded once you have your Dsco account API key. Shopify connects through our Shopify App Store app or your Admin API credentials. Dsco also provides an intuitive onboarding interface inside its portal that supports initial order, acknowledgement and shipping testing, which makes the go-live smoother.
Which flows does Commercium sync between Shopify and Dsco?
Product, inventory, order, order acknowledge, shipment and packing-slip sync. Warehouse routing, carrier and service-code mapping, partial shipments and cost fields are handled as part of those flows.
Which retailers can I connect through Dsco?
We have integrated Dsco for customers across retailers and partners including Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, Chewy, Anthropologie, Kohl’s, Zulily, Free People, PGA TOUR Superstore, Absolute Snow, Shoe Carnival, Rob & Taylor, Zappos, Neiman Marcus and Saks OFF 5TH. If you can’t find your retailer in the list, don’t worry, we can add it within a day.
Do data requirements differ between retailers on Dsco?
Yes, and this is the main thing to plan for. Shipping and product-data workflows, field mappings and required attributes differ for every trading partner. Commercium holds one mapping profile per retailer over your single Shopify catalogue, so onboarding the next retailer reuses the work already done for the first.
Do I have to duplicate my Shopify catalogue to supply Dsco retailers?
No. Commercium reads your existing Shopify products and variants and translates them per retailer using mapping profiles. Nothing is exported to spreadsheets, and your team keeps editing products in Shopify.
How is inventory kept in sync between Shopify and Dsco retailers?
Selected Shopify locations are pooled into a single available quantity, adjusted by any safety buffer you set per retailer, and pushed to Dsco near real time. When an order lands on any channel, the pooled quantity is recalculated and every trading partner is updated, which is what protects your fill rate.
Are Shopify multi-location inventories supported?
Yes. You choose which locations contribute to dropship availability, and routing rules decide which location or 3PL fulfils each retailer order, so your Dsco availability can differ from your total on-hand stock by design.
Are Dsco orders created inside Shopify?
They can be. Retailer orders are created as Shopify orders tagged by trading partner, with customer notifications suppressed, the correct fulfilment location assigned and dropship cost on the lines, so picking happens in your normal workflow without polluting your store reporting.
What if my Shopify products have no barcodes?
Barcodes are optional in Shopify but expected by most Dsco retailers. Commercium audits barcode completeness and format before go-live, flags gaps as blocking issues, and supports metafield fallbacks where a retailer accepts an alternative identifier.
How are acknowledgement deadlines handled?
Orders are downloaded on a schedule, checked against live pooled stock and acknowledged automatically under rules you set, accepting, backordering or cancelling lines. Orders approaching a retailer’s window are escalated to your team before the deadline passes.
How are retailer packing slips handled?
Each order’s retailer-branded packing slip is retrieved from Dsco and routed with the pick list to the fulfilling Shopify location or 3PL, so the right slip prints where the order is packed.
How are tracking numbers and carriers handled?
Carrier codes and service levels are per retailer, not universal. Each trading partner gets its own carrier mapping table, so tracking submitted from Shopify or your 3PL is accepted and the shopper actually sees it.
Do cancellations, backorders and returns flow both ways?
Yes. Line cancellations and backorders raised during acknowledgement are reported to the retailer, retailer-side cancellations are reflected in Shopify, and return information is captured so cost reporting and accounting agree.
Are Shopify metafields supported for retailer attributes?
Yes. Required retailer attributes that Shopify has no native field for can live in metafields, keeping Shopify the single place your merchandisers edit while retailers still receive complete item data.
Does Commercium need a Shopify app install?
You can install our app from the Shopify App Store, or connect through Shopify’s Admin API with scoped permissions you approve. No theme changes are required, and access can be revoked from your Shopify admin at any time.
Are Shopify bundles or kits supported?
Yes. Bundles and kits can be supplied as a single item while inventory is deducted from the component SKUs, so component stock stays accurate across Shopify and every retailer.
