Discogs quantity field vs. Notes/Comment field: which inventory method should you use?

Discogs gives you two ways to track stock on a listing. Here is exactly how Disconnect treats each one, and why we point new sellers at one of them.

DISCOGS GUIDE

Two ways to tell Disconnect how much stock you have

The older method stores quantity as plain text inside a Discogs listing's Notes or Comment field, in the format "q=x". You pick one field, write that format into every listing, and Disconnect reads it on import.

The newer method uses Discogs' own quantity field. Disconnect imports it directly, then writes a unique product code into a Comments or Location field of your choosing so the same physical item can be recognized across every connected channel.

One method is a convention you maintain by hand. The other is a field Discogs already gives you, plus the linking code that makes cross-channel sync reliable.

Why we recommend the quantity field for new sellers

It is the setup we support most and the one our own troubleshooting tools are built around. Because the quantity lives in a real Discogs field rather than a text convention, there is no formatting to get wrong and no risk of a stray edit to your Notes breaking the sync.

The unique product code we append during setup is what lets Disconnect confidently relink a relisted item back to its Shopify, WooCommerce, eBay or Amazon counterpart later, which matters a lot once you get into order and cancellation handling.

If you are already using q=x, here is what carries over

Inventory only flows from Discogs to your other channels once, on that first import. After that, quantity updates are expected to come from your source channel or from Disconnect itself, not from further edits to Discogs.

If you do keep editing quantity inside Discogs after the initial import, we still track those changes and push them onward, but we do not recommend it long-term. It works, it is just the path we support least.
